Happy Peeps Counselling and Therapy Sydney provides trauma therapy treatment and support for children, adolescents and adult who may be distressed and struggle or are overwhelmed with everyday life. Trauma is a mental health disorder or psychological condition that causes major and extensive stress and raises deep emotions that are difficult to manage. We will help you build skills and strategies to feel safe and cope with functioning in your everyday life. We understand that trauma may impact you to the point that you become dissociated with your surroundings and may not be coping. We help you to build skills and develop strategies that are suitable for you.

Trauma may include Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is a complex trauma disorder. PTSD is a condition that may have developed from a traumatic event which may have threatened your life or safety or you may have witnessed other people’s lives being threatened. The PTSD may be like a video playing over in your mind as you relive the traumatic event and try to avoid or ignore any memories. You may feel dissociation which causes a lack of connection in a person’s thoughts, memory and sense of identity. This may cause you to feel numb and emotionally distraught inside.

PTSD may be from experiencing or witnessing a serious car accident, physical assault or sexual abuse and assault, emotional abuse, military, war or terrorism or being involved in a natural disaster.
When working with our military families we used reality therapy a client centred form of cognitive behaviour therapy. This approach is based on the idea that our most 5 basic needs may be provided through love and belonging, power or sense of worth, freedom or independence, fun or a sense of pleasure and survival. When a person feels these needs are not being provided mental health issues may arise.

Our psychotherapists work from a trauma informed approach to help you to recover from your trauma. We will work with you to reconnect your body with your mind, to settle the body and improve the functioning of the mind thought processes. Our practitioners will work with you from a trauma informed therapy practice approach, we will take the highest care and will not ask you to tell us your full story as we understand you may be re-traumatised by this experience.

You may have lived in a house with another person with trauma and you may have developed trauma symptoms or severe stress. Your Trauma or Complex trauma may be in conjunction with other disorders or mental health concerns. You may have acute anxiety, depression or an addiction from your trauma.

You may have developed an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or a binge eating disorder or Borderline personality disorder. (BDP)

Your trauma experience may be from a once only event or multiple distressing events. Trauma may affect you at the time of the event or it may not affect you for days, weeks, months or even years after the distressing event has occurred.

Self-Harm

Self-harm also known as self-injury is when people inflict physical harm on themselves, in private and secretly, often without suicidal intentions. People who self-harm often cover up the signs of behaviour by wearing long sleeves over cut skin. You may be using self-harm to cope with difficult or painful feelings that you experience on a regular basis. Our practitioners will help you to work through your pain by learning new skills and using other strategies and techniques to cope. Self-harm may be a sign of surviving trauma, to numb pain, feel a sense of release or control. The relief is short lived and the urge may return and the cycle may continue with long term damage, infection and sometimes life-threatening medical problems.

Suicidal Ideation
Suicidal ideation is when a child, adolescent or adults has thoughts that life isn’t worth living and may have plans to end their life. Most people do not go on to take their lives but a cry for help should be taken seriously. Some of the psychosocial risk factors and symptoms may be depression and this increases the risk of attempted suicide or even suicide attempts.
